How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Corporate Training

corporate Mar 03, 2021

A business is only as strong as its people. Responsive, customized, need-based training makes the difference between a good workforce and a great one. Studies prove that ongoing professional development is the single most crucial factor in recruiting and retaining quality employees. To optimize corporate growth and ensure the organization's stability today and tomorrow, investing in corporate training that fits the corporate budget is key to sustained growth.

Determining corporate training needs can be a lengthy process – from initial training needs assessment to selecting a training provider, it demands an understanding of the corporation's business process and the current needs to improve. Corporate training is a significant effort of time, money, and resources and can lead to waste if not planned correctly.

Here are some guidelines in ensuring your organization can smartly make the most out of your training investment.

Treat your corporate training initiative as a project and use the following steps to ensure you have covered your basis:

Analysis and Assessment

  • Spend a whole day identifying key people, interviewing managers, surveying employees, and talking about training needs. Take the time to understand your strategic goals, gauge your HR challenges, identify skill gaps, and determine what is holding your business back from being even more profitable.

Training and Curriculum Development

  • Develop training specific to you that respects your employees' availability and learning styles, allowing them to pick and choose activities and modules that work for them while still delivering the learning they want and need. This can include but is not limited to self-assessment surveys with personal feedback, listening to podcasts, watching, responding to video-based instruction, attending in-class lectures and workshops, and engaging in business simulation games role-playing.

Approval and Implementation

  • Once we have your training developed, test it before implementing it with your staff. When staff feedback is incorporated, establish a schedule for rolling out the training and set benchmarks for completion. Then, let the training begin!

Evaluation

  • Evaluate your employees' learning through testing and one-to-one assessment. Ask your staff to evaluate the training company: Did the training meet your expectations? Did it solve a specific problem or problems? What could we do better next time?

Avoid training issues through close collaboration between your key stakeholders, staff, and the training providers.
